VOLUNTEERS--VERY IMPORTANT PERFORMERS

Libby Myers
How long have you been a HARRA member? : Since 1996
Are you a member of a running club? : HMSA (Houston Masters Sports Association)
Volunteering experience:
Brief description of HARRA volunteer service performed (roles, responsibilities, relate an experience or story, etc.): I am a coach for Power In Motion, a HARRA sponsored program for runners that meets for 10 weeks in the spring and fall at Memorial Park. I also help the Houston Masters put on the 25K warmup race in November. I don ’t have a specific job, but I try and do everything from packet stuffing, to registration and race day activities.
How did you get involved with volunteering or what motivates you to volunteer? I was a participant in the Power in Motion program first and was then asked to be a coach. Also, there are so many wonderful people in the Houston Masters and the entire running community that give and have given of their time and volunteered for so many years that are such great role models that it makes others want to give of their time too.
Which of the following are motivators?
• Affiliation
• Accomplishment
• Influence/impact
• Leadership opportunities
• Recognition
The affiliation as well as the influence/impact of other runners is why I volunteer. There are so many great runners and volunteers in Houston. Volunteering is a way of getting to know other people, not just runners, learning from them and having a good time all at the same time.
List skills, abilities, hobbies, training, educational background or other volunteer experience that aids you in your volunteer support for HARRA: I’ve experienced my share of phobias, injuries, mishaps, etc. known to runners so I feel I can identify with them in many capacities. Otherwise, I don’t have much of a volunteering history, but I ’m healthy and not too dysfunctional so am able to follow directions and work well with others without being supervised too closely.
What benefits do you perceive from volunteering? It’s a way of giving back and contributing in a positive and productive way.
What can HARRA do to provide a positive experience for its volunteers? HARRA is a great organization and advocate for the Houston running community. I try to encourage all runners to be a member of HARRA.
THANK YOU FOR VOLUNTEERING!
