VOLUNTEERS--VERY IMPORTANT PERFORMERS

Jack Lippincott
How long have you been a HARRA member? : Since it began (1993, I think...)
Are you a member of a running club? : Yes. Terlingua Track Club. I've been a member since 1974. That's my competitive club. I'm also in Houston Masters, since officially becoming an old fart about 15 years ago. That's my social club...
Volunteering experience:
Brief description of HARRA volunteer service performed (roles, responsibilities, relate an experience or story, etc.): Served on the Board of Directors as Treasurer for two years. Have volunteered at many races over the years, when I couldn't run. (I'm usually an Ironfoot qualifier in both Fall and Spring Series). Help my club (Terlingua) put on the LP Run. Help my other club (Houston Masters) put on the 25K Championship. Have been on the committee that puts on the Houston Marathon for the last ten years (that's the annual HARRA marathon championship event). Wrote an article for Footprints some time ago. Am currently AED trained and qualified, and have covered the Tour de Bayou events as a course safety monitor with that group for the last year.
How did you get involved with volunteering or what motivates you to volunteer? Just believe in giving something back to the running community besides entry fees.
Which of the following are motivators for you? (Affiliation, accomplishment, influence/impact, recognition, leadership opportunities) All of those things listed are motivators.
List skills, abilities, hobbies, training, educational background or other volunteer experience that aids you in your volunteer support for HARRA: I'm a CPA, which allows me to help with financial matters. I used to be a competitive open, then age-group runner. That gives me an appreciation for races that have adequate awards and recognition to the hot-shot runners. Now that I'm a middle-of-the-packer, I appreciate the races that provide the safety, perks, and post-race parties that everyone expects and deserves.
What benefits do you perceive from volunteering? Races can't continue to exist without the folks who put them on. I'm just trying to do my fair share so that there are always races out there.
What can HARRA do to provide a positive experience for its volunteers? The VVIP program is effective. The Houston Marathon puts on a big bar-b-q every year for its volunteers. HARRA could think about doing something like that once a year.
